4th August 2017, Nanong, Pemagatshel: The much awaited dream of Tephu community under Nanong Geog was materialized on July 15th 2017. The commoner long awaited dream of having a pure jersey bull in their vicinity was over when a government DCM truck with what the village so called as ’ Norbu’ arrived in their village. It was a great moment to the Tephu farmers. The bull was well received by the community with a khadar (religious scarf) ceremony and the crowd echoed “ Norbu rinpoche, Yang Nang Sho Na”. It was a wonderful scene and I realized the dream of commoner. Their dreams are away from fancy mobile and cars. Immediately, Mr. Sonam volunteered to be the Community Bull Keeper who promised to charge minimal fees for the service.
In the past, it was a nightmare for the farmers of Tephu village to breed their cattle during heat. Especially in odd hours they had to avoid the required bull services mainly due to labour shortages and the long distance they have to travel in availing services. Further their life was in stake as they have to travel through terrain and things get worst as the cow in heat is expected to mount the owner and in the process fall from the cliff. To Memey Dorji, the coming of the government supplied bull in their community will not only save the labour but will also make the breeding much cheaper and available 24 hours a day. Previously, the community use to pay Ngultrum 300 for a single service and additional Ngultrum 500 for birth of a calf to the owner of the bull. Tephu village comprises of 35 House Hold and has about 150 jersey cross cows. With the placement of this bull, it will also benefit the community of Tephu, Geyri, Minjung and Rayzor. The bull was supplied by the Livestock sector with a aim to improve jersey breed in the community.
